What is the Metro Police and Traffic Learnership Programme?

This programme is a paid training course run by the City of Cape Town.
It is designed for people who want to become police officers or traffic officers in the city.
During the learnership you will learn how to keep streets safe, help people, and handle traffic situations.

Who can apply?

  • You must have a Grade 12 certificate (prove it with a copy).
  • You must live in the City of Cape Town (proof of residence).
  • You need to speak English and at least one other official South African language.
  • Your age must be 18 to 35 years.
  • You must be fit for physical training and able to do tough exercises.
  • You should be good at working in a team and under pressure.
  • You must have a clean criminal record – no pending cases or past misconduct.
  • You must hold a valid Code B driver’s licence (manual).
  • You must be unemployed as of 7 January 2026.
  • You should finish the required pre‑courses:
    • FET Certificate: Road Traffic Law Enforcement
    • Law Enforcement Skills Programme SP4/2012
  • You should not have visible tattoos that would show in a uniform.

Fitness Test

All shortlisted applicants must pass a physical exam.
If you fail any part, you will not move to the next stage.

Pregnant applicants cannot take the fitness test.


Extra Selection Steps

If you pass the fitness test, you will also need to:

  • Take a written test.
  • Attend an interview.
  • Get a medical check‑up.
  • Provide fingerprints and ID numbers for background checks.
  • Complete drug testing, a driving test, and a psychological test.
  • Follow the Public Safety Training College’s rules and pass all requirements.

Conditions of the Learnership

  • The programme does not automatically lead to a permanent job.
  • Anyone who was fired from a local government job for misconduct is not eligible.
  • You must be free of chronic illnesses or physical problems that could stop training.
  • If you quit or fail because of discipline, you must pay the City back.
  • You will wear a uniform and may work any shift, in any weather, and anywhere inside or outside the city limits.
  • You need to stay physically and mentally fit, and you may need extra training later.
  • You cannot run another job or business without the City’s written permission.

  4. If you need a computer, you can use a Smart Cape computer at City libraries (you will need to show proof of ID and residence).
  5. After you are shortlisted, you will get an SMS or phone call with test dates.
  6. Bring your own water, food, and the gear you’ll need for the fitness test.
