What Is the ATS Bursary Programme?

The ATS Bursary Programme is a free training path that helps South Africans become air traffic professionals. It is run by the Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Limited, a company that keeps our skies safe. The programme covers every part of the education needed to become an Air Traffic Services Officer, including:

  • Air traffic control basics
  • Aerodrome (airport) control
  • Approach control (guiding planes on the ground)
  • En‑route control (guiding planes while they travel in the air)

Training happens at the ATNS Aviation Training Academy in Bonaero Park, Gauteng – a school that is recognised by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The main goal is to fast‑track talented young people, especially those who have faced disadvantages, into the aviation sector. This brings more diversity, fairness and fresh ideas to the industry.


Bursary Streams You Can Join

  • Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO) – Manage all traffic in the air and on the ground.
  • Aeronautical Information Management Officer (AIMO) – Keep flight data up to date.
  • Target Generating Officer (TGO) – Help plan flight routes.
  • Airport Management Centre (AMC) Liaison Officer – Coordinate between airport teams.
  • Simulator Support Officer (SSO) – Maintain the flight training simulators.

What Does the Bursary Cover?

  • Attach Grade 12 results with your application
  • Open to relocating anywhere in South Africa
  • Unemployed youth only – we want to help new talent
  • Not a repeat applicant – if you already did a similar ATNS programme, you cannot apply again

You also need a strong interest in flying, good communication, and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
