Free Postbank Black Card – SASSA Gold Card holders, 31 Aug 2026
Thousands of South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries still use the SASSA Gold Card to receive their monthly grants. Postbank has warned that the card will stop working after 31 August 2026, so you must act now.
What is happening?
Postbank is swapping the old Gold Card for a new Postbank Black Card. The new card has better security and lets you continue to withdraw cash, shop, check balances and print statements. If you already have a Black Card, you do not need to do anything.
Who needs to replace the card?
- Anyone who still has a SASSA Gold Card or a Gold Postbank social‑grant card.
- People with a valid South African ID book, smart ID card or temporary ID.
What you gain
- Improved fraud protection.
- Continued access to your grant after August 2026.
- Ability to make ATM withdrawals and retail purchases.
- Free balance enquiries and statement printing.
How to get your Postbank Black Card (step‑by‑step)
- Check the nearest collection point. Dial *120*355# and follow the prompts.
- Gather your document. Bring your South African ID book, smart ID card or temporary ID certificate. No extra forms are required.
- Visit a participating retailer. Look for Postbank service points inside selected Shoprite, Checkers, Boxer, Pick n Pay, SPAR or Usave stores. Not every branch offers the service, so confirm first.
- Collect your new card. The replacement is free of charge. The staff will give you the Black Card on the spot.
- Activate the card. Follow the instructions on the card to set your PIN and start using it.
Tips to make the process smoother
- Don’t wait until the last week of August. Queues can get long.
- Call the USSD code before you travel to avoid unnecessary trips.
- Keep your PIN secret – never share it with anyone.
- If a stranger asks for money to “process” the card, report it – the service is free.
- You can collect the card in any province, not just where your grant was approved.
What if you miss the deadline?
After 31 August 2026 the Gold Card will stop working. You will not be able to withdraw cash, shop or check your balance with it. You will need a Black Card before you can use your grant again, which could delay payments.
