What This Learnership Offers

This 12‑month course is designed to give you real skills that can lead to a steady job in one of South Africa’s most important areas: clean water and wastewater treatment. As the country works on better water infrastructure, there will be lots of jobs waiting for people who know how to keep water safe and clean.

Skills You’ll Gain

  • Water Science – Learn how water is cleaned and the chemicals that help.
  • Wastewater Operations – Understand how sewage is processed and how sludge is handled.
  • Plant Operations – Get hands‑on with machines, pumps, and filtration systems.
  • Safety & Rules – Study national (SANS) and international (WHO) standards and how to test water.
  • Monitoring & Reporting – Learn to take samples, test quality, and keep accurate records.

You’ll do both classroom learning and practical work at a plant.

Who Can Join

  • South African citizen
  • Unemployed
  • Preferably living near Thembisile Hani Local Municipality
  • Finished Grade 12 (Matric). A background in Math or Physical Science is helpful but not required.
  • Ready to learn technical skills and work on both theory and real jobs
  • Able to stay for the whole 12 months

With the SAQA 60190 certificate you can start as:

  • Wastewater Plant Assistant
  • Water Quality Technician Assistant
  • Municipal Plant Operator

If you keep learning, you can grow into roles such as:

  • Certified Water Process Controller (Class IV)
