The 2025 Prison Visitor Breakthrough: How October Intake Rules Are Turning the Tables for Families

Department of Correctional Services Invites suitably qualified applicants to apply for their Independent Correctional Centre Visitor vacancies.

What You’ll Do as an Independent Correctional Centre Visitor
As an Independent Correctional Centre Visitor, you’ll visit prisons, talk with inmates and staff, and keep an eye on the safety and well‑being of everyone inside. Your main tasks will include:
- Visiting each centre every day to talk with inmates and correctional officers about complaints or problems.
- Checking the facilities and conditions, and reporting what you find.
- Keeping track of serious incidents such as deaths, segregation, the use of restraints or any use of force.
- Helping the Joint Investigation Citizens’ Service (JICS) during inspections and investigations.
- Handling paperwork: collecting inmate complaints, writing detailed reports and doing other office chores.
You’ll work for 36 months under a fixed‑term contract.
Salary and Benefits
- Base pay: R85 620 per year (level 05).
- Extras: 37 % in lieu of benefits.
This is a regular full‑time position, so you’ll get paid every month and have a set schedule.

Who Should Apply?
- You must have a Grade 12 or Senior certificate.
- You should be confident using a computer and able to keep accurate records.
- A letter from a community organization that recommends you as an Independent Correctional Centre Visitor is required (the letter must be less than six months old).
- You need to work well on your own and in a team.
- Knowledge of the Batho Pele principles—“people first” values—is a plus.
- You should be calm under pressure, able to speak and write clearly.
- A driver’s licence is extra handy but not mandatory.
