What You’ll Do as a Case Officer

Your day will mix paperwork, legal tasks and on‑the‑ground work. Key responsibilities include:

  • Sentence Management: Keep track of prison sentences and update records when the Case Management Committee makes changes.
  • Documentation: Fill out forms (G331, G356), update computer files and store official paperwork.
  • Profile Reports: Write detailed reports (G326) that show each offender’s progress and keep the register current.
  • Parole and Release: Record parole recommendations, check that inmates serve the required minimum time, and make sure release dates are correct.
  • Administrative Work: Handle mail, keep information confidential and manage classified documents.
  • Security and Compliance: Protect the custody of inmates, check rooms, monitor movements and keep equipment safe.

How to Advance

The job has three levels. You start at CB1‑1 with no prior experience. After ten years you can move to CB1‑2, and another ten years later you can reach CB1‑3. Each level brings higher pay and more responsibilities.

Who Can Apply?

  • Must have a Grade 12 (Matric) certificate.
  • Must have finished a Correctional Science Learnership, Basic Training or an Induction Training Course (ITC).
  • For higher levels you need ten years of experience from the level below.

Key Skills Needed

  • Computer savvy – you’ll be using lots of software.
  • Basic knowledge of firearms – safety training is provided.
  • Good communication – both speaking and writing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills – you’ll work with many people.
  • Report writing – you’ll produce clear, accurate documents.
  • Understanding of correctional law and policies.
  • Familiarity with minimum security standards.
