What Is the Learner Firefighter Programme?

Rural Metro Emergency Management Services (Pty) Ltd is looking for young people who want to become firefighters in the Hessequa Region of the Western Cape.
The programme is a full‑time training course that shows you how to fight fires, rescue people, handle hazardous materials, and keep communities safe. You’ll learn the same skills that experienced firefighters use each day, plus you’ll develop teamwork, discipline and a strong sense of service.

You only need to meet a few basic requirements, so many teens can qualify:

  • National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) – you must have finished high school with a matric pass.
  • Firefighter 1 certification – you must own a valid F 1 card.
  • Hazmat Awareness certification – proof that you know how to handle dangerous chemicals.
  • Healthy and fit – you’ll go through a medical and fitness check to make sure you can work in physically demanding situations.
  • Criminal record check – you must have no criminal history.
  • Valid driver’s licence (Code B) – having a Code C or EC licence with a PrDP is a bonus.
  • Complete the paperwork – you need to fill out all the forms and submit them by the deadline.
