What Is the Learner Firefighter Programme?
Rural Metro Emergency Management Services (Pty) Ltd is looking for young people who want to become firefighters in the Hessequa Region of the Western Cape.
The programme is a full‑time training course that shows you how to fight fires, rescue people, handle hazardous materials, and keep communities safe. You’ll learn the same skills that experienced firefighters use each day, plus you’ll develop teamwork, discipline and a strong sense of service.
Who Can Apply?
You only need to meet a few basic requirements, so many teens can qualify:
- National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) – you must have finished high school with a matric pass.
- Firefighter 1 certification – you must own a valid F 1 card.
- Hazmat Awareness certification – proof that you know how to handle dangerous chemicals.
- Healthy and fit – you’ll go through a medical and fitness check to make sure you can work in physically demanding situations.
- Criminal record check – you must have no criminal history.
- Valid driver’s licence (Code B) – having a Code C or EC licence with a PrDP is a bonus.
- Complete the paperwork – you need to fill out all the forms and submit them by the deadline.

What Will You Do?
Once you’re accepted, you’ll start a job that fills out a big part of the community’s safety plans. Your daily tasks will include:
- Responding to fires, rescues and hazardous material incidents.
- Helping firefighters extinguish fires and rescue people trapped inside buildings.
- Giving basic first aid to people who are hurt.
- Practicing drills, running fitness sessions and participating in emergency simulations.
- Keeping fire trucks, tools and station rooms in good shape.
- Teaching local school groups about fire safety and how to act during a fire.
- Writing reports for every incident you handle.
- Following strict health, safety and quality rules so everyone stays safe.
