MANCOSA Cybersecurity Learnership 2026: How to Apply
If you’re unemployed, between 18 and 35, and want to break into cybersecurity without a university degree, the MANCOSA Cybersecurity Learnership might be the clearest path forward right now. This isn’t just classroom training. You’ll get real workplace experience, a monthly stipend, and a genuine chance at a job when you finish.
The Opportunity at a Glance
This is a 12-month learnership programme run by MANCOSA in partnership with The Transcendance Group. It’s designed to take unemployed South African youth and turn them into entry-level cybersecurity professionals.
- Location: Cape Town, Western Cape
- Duration: 12 months
- Format: Classroom learning + workplace exposure (hybrid)
- Stipend: Yes, paid monthly according to MICTSETA guidelines
- Employment pathway: Possible job placement after completion
- Closing date: 28 April 2026
Who Can Apply
You need to meet these requirements:
- South African citizen
- Currently unemployed
- Aged 18–35 years
- Grade 12 (Matric) qualification minimum
- Able to commit to the full 12 months
- Available for both classroom and workplace training
Preference goes to people living in Cape Town and the surrounding Western Cape area. But if you’re from elsewhere in South Africa and meet the requirements, you can still apply.
Important: You don’t need any IT qualification or previous cybersecurity experience. Matric is genuinely enough to start.
What Will Make Your Application Stronger
While not required, these things help:
- Basic knowledge of how computer networks work
- Any short courses in digital or IT topics you’ve done
- Familiarity with coding basics (even self-taught)
- General computer literacy
- Clear interest in cybersecurity as a career
If you’re missing these, don’t panic. But spending a few weeks learning cybersecurity basics online before you apply will genuinely improve your chances.
What You’ll Learn and Gain
This learnership isn’t theoretical. You’ll work in real cybersecurity environments alongside professionals.
Security Monitoring
You’ll assist with tracking security alerts, spotting threats, and using monitoring dashboards. This is foundational work in Security Operations Centres (SOCs)—the nerve centre of cybersecurity teams.
IT Security Compliance
You’ll support teams working on security policies, audit preparation, and governance frameworks. These skills are valuable across corporate and government IT departments.
Vulnerability and System Reviews
You’ll learn to identify system weaknesses, review configurations, and document risks. This builds your understanding of how systems fail and how to protect them.
Incident Reporting and Documentation
One of the most underrated cybersecurity skills is accurate documentation. You’ll capture incident reports, maintain audit trails, and track how issues get resolved. Many IT governance roles start here.
Portfolio of Evidence
By the end, you’ll have documented proof of your skills. Your portfolio will include monitoring logs, project participation records, compliance exposure, and training certificates. Employers value this highly.
The Monthly Stipend
You’ll receive a monthly stipend aligned with MICTSETA guidelines. This includes:
- Transport assistance
- Learning participation support
- Recognition of your workplace experience
This means you can focus on training without worrying about survival expenses.
Jobs You Could Move Into After Completion
Successful learners typically progress into:
- Entry-level cybersecurity analyst roles
- IT support technician positions
- Security monitoring assistant jobs
- Compliance documentation roles
- IT governance support positions
Don’t underestimate how valuable one year of real cybersecurity experience looks on a CV. It opens doors across almost every industry.
How to Apply (Step by Step)
Step 1: Prepare your documents
Get together a professional CV, your Matric certificate, and proof of South African citizenship.
Step 2: Highlight relevant experience
Even if it’s not IT-related, mention any digital skills, short courses, volunteer work, or self-study you’ve done. Show that you’re willing to learn.
Step 3: Apply online
Apply through the official MANCOSA portal here. Make sure you submit before the deadline: 28 April 2026.
Step 4: Wait for feedback
After applying, expect communication about shortlisting and any interviews.
How to Improve Your Chances of Selection
Meeting the minimum requirements doesn’t guarantee selection. Here’s what to do before you apply:
- Update your CV professionally (use a clear template, correct spelling, honest details)
- Complete at least one free cybersecurity short course online
- Learn basic networking concepts (YouTube is free)
- Research digital threats and how businesses protect against them
- Show genuine commitment in your application—explain why cybersecurity interests you
- Submit early (don’t wait until the last week)
Applicants who show they’ve already started learning cybersecurity on their own stand out.
Key Things to Know
Is employment guaranteed? No. But high-performing learners are prioritised for placement with the host organisation or partner companies.
Is it only for Western Cape residents? Preference is given to Cape Town and surrounding areas. But eligible South African applicants from other provinces can still apply.
Is it online or in-person? It’s hybrid. You’ll have classroom sessions, workplace exposure at the host organisation, and some online learning components.
What if I don’t have IT experience? That’s fine. The programme is designed for entry-level learners. Digital familiarity helps, but isn’t required.
