GEPFuture Internship Programme 2026: Finance and Risk Management
If you’ve just finished your degree in Finance, Accounting, Risk Management, or Internal Auditing, you’re facing one of South Africa’s toughest challenges: landing your first professional job without experience. The Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF) has just opened a door that many graduates miss. They’re looking for unemployed graduates to join a structured internship programme that lasts nearly two years — and it’s one of the strongest entry points into public-sector financial services available right now.
Why This Internship Matters Right Now
Most South African graduates struggle to break into the job market after completing their qualifications. Internships like this one are your best chance to gain real workplace experience in a professional environment. GEPF isn’t a small organisation — it’s a national pension fund that handles billions in assets. Working there gives you credentials that open doors across government and the financial sector.
The closing date is 26 April 2026. Applications are already open. If you’re eligible, you need to start preparing now.
What Is the GEPFuture Internship Programme?
This is a structured internship programme run by the Government Employees Pension Fund. You’ll spend nearly two years (from 1 June 2026 to 31 March 2028) working in one of two fields: Finance or Risk Management / Internal Auditing.
The programme is based at GEPF’s headquarters in Centurion. You’ll work alongside qualified professionals, rotate through different departments, and build real skills in public-sector financial management.
Who Can Apply?
You must meet all of these requirements:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be between 18 and 35 years old
- Have completed a Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma (NQF Level 7) in your field
- Currently be unemployed
- Have never completed an internship in your field before
- Have no formal work experience in your field
- Not still be studying
GEPF also prefers candidates who achieved strong academic results. Aim for at least 60% undergraduate average or 55% postgraduate average if that applies to you.
Two Fields to Choose From
Finance Internships suit you if you hold a Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in Accounting or Finance. You’ll work in areas like financial accounting, public finance, pension fund administration, treasury operations, financial reporting, and compliance accounting.
Risk Management / Internal Auditing Internships are for graduates with a degree or diploma in Risk Management or Internal Auditing. You’ll focus on risk and compliance, internal auditing, governance oversight, enterprise risk frameworks, and public-sector monitoring.
What You’ll Gain
Working inside GEPF gives you experience that few South African graduates get access to. You won’t just sit in a corner filing papers. You’ll gain hands-on knowledge of:
- How public-sector financial systems actually work
- Pension fund administration and management
- Compliance and risk procedures in government
- Governance reporting and financial policy
- Internal audit and monitoring systems
These skills are highly valued by employers like the National Treasury, the Auditor-General, Provincial Treasury departments, and municipal finance teams. Many GEPF interns go on to secure permanent positions in these organisations.
The 22-month duration is also an advantage. You’ll have time to rotate through different departments, build strong references, and prove your value to potential employers.
How to Apply — Step by Step
Step 1: Prepare your documents
Gather these five things:
- Your CV (maximum 2 pages)
- A certified copy of your ID
- Your academic transcripts
- Your qualification certificates (degree or diploma)
- Your academic average marks — write this clearly on your CV
Step 2: Write a clear subject line
When you email your application, use one of these subject lines exactly as shown:
- “Application: Finance Intern” (if you’re applying for Finance), or
- “Application: Risk Management Intern” (if you’re applying for Risk Management / Internal Auditing)
Step 3: Send your email
Email your completed application to: Adresponse2hydepark@fempower.co.za
Attach all five documents listed above.
Step 4: Check the deadline
Applications close on 26 April 2026. Don’t wait until the last day — email systems can be slow, and you want your application to arrive safely.
Tips to Improve Your Chances
This internship is competitive. Many applicants will apply. Here’s what you can do to stand out:
Make your academic average visible. Don’t hide it in a paragraph. Put it at the top of your CV or in a summary section. GEPF is looking for graduates who took their studies seriously.
Keep your CV to exactly 2 pages. No longer. Recruiters receive hundreds of applications — a long CV gets rejected quickly.
Ensure your transcripts are certified. An uncertified transcript can cost you the opportunity. Check with your university that your copies are officially certified.
Use the correct subject line. If your email subject line doesn’t match their requirements, your application might get filtered out by automated systems.
Apply only in your qualification field. Don’t apply for Finance if your degree is in Risk Management. Match your application to your qualification.
Apply early. Government internship programmes receive large volumes of applications in the final weeks. Send yours in the first two weeks if possible. This also shows enthusiasm.
Common Questions Answered
Can I apply if I’m still studying? No. You must have already completed your Degree or Advanced Diploma. Current students are not eligible.
Can I apply if I’ve done another internship before? No. GEPF only accepts applicants who have never completed an internship in their field before.
Will I get paid? GEPF hasn’t specified the stipend amount in this advert, but public-sector internships typically offer monthly stipends aligned with graduate internship frameworks. Confirm details when you’re shortlisted.
Will accommodation be provided? No. The internship is based in Centurion, and you’ll need to arrange your own accommodation.
Will I know if my application was received? Government organisations don’t always send confirmation emails. Keep a copy of your sent email for your records.
What Happens Next
If GEPF shortlists you, they’ll contact you for an interview. This is your chance to show them why you’re serious about a career in financial services. Prepare by researching GEPF, understanding what pension funds do, and being ready to explain why this field interests you.
Not everyone will be selected — that’s the reality. But if you meet the requirements and apply properly, you have a genuine shot. Thousands of South African graduates would take this opportunity if they knew about it. You do. Use that advantage.
Your next step: Check that you meet all the requirements. If you do, start gathering your documents today. Don’t wait until April. The stronger your application package is, the better your chances.
This internship can be a real turning point in your career. Apply with confidence.
