About the Mpumalanga Department of Health

The department’s job is to give good, affordable health care to people in Mpumalanga.
It runs a network of hospitals and clinics across the Ehlanzeni, Nkangala and Gert Sibande districts.
To make patient care better, it is hiring more Medical Officers.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for the Medical Officer Grade 1 role, you must:

  • Have a MBChB degree that lets you register with the HPCSA as a Medical Practitioner.
  • Hold a current HPCSA registration (2025) for Independent Practice.
  • For foreign applicants, hold a valid work permit.
  • Know the basics of medical ethics and professional rules.

Experience Needed

  • Grade 1: No previous work required if you’re a South‑African trained doctor with Independent Practice registration.
  • Foreign doctors: Need at least one year of relevant experience after registration with the HPCSA or a recognised foreign council.

Key Skills

  • Ready to work day and night shifts at Level 2/3 hospitals.
  • Good at taking patient histories, examining them, and making clinical decisions.
  • Can work well with doctors, nurses, and other health staff.
  • Understands current health regulations and public‑service rules.

Main Duties

  • Deliver top‑quality care that meets hospital standards.
  • Manage patients admitted to Level 2/3 facilities.
  • Help write and follow new clinical guidelines.
  • Teach and support learning programs in the hospital.
  • Join in audits and ongoing professional learning.
  • Assist hospital managers to improve services and patient outcomes.
