Livelihoods Support Grant Proposal 2026: What It Means for SRD Recipients

Many unemployed South Africans worry what will happen to the R370 SRD grant. Government is now asking the public for ideas about a possible new grant called the Livelihoods Support Grant.

This new idea could change how support is given to job seekers. It may link the money to looking for work, learning new skills, and joining employment programmes. The proposal is not final yet, and public comments are open until 30 April 2026.

What is the Livelihoods Support Grant proposal?

The Livelihoods Support Grant is still just a plan. It aims to replace the current SRD grant with a longer-term system that helps unemployed people aged 18 to 59 move towards work. The SRD grant itself continues at R370 per month until March 2027 while discussions continue.

Under the new proposal, support may depend on registering as a job seeker, taking part in skills training, and engaging with employment opportunities such as learnerships, internships, EPWP or YES programmes.

Who may qualify?

Based on current ideas, the grant would likely go to unemployed South African citizens aged 18–59 who are below a certain income level and willing to take part in job-seeking or skills activities. Exact rules are not final yet.

What could you gain?

If approved, the grant could give you regular support while also connecting you to training and job opportunities. You might get help with SETA programmes, TVET courses, workplace readiness, or digital skills. This could make it easier to find work or start your own small business in future.

How to prepare now

Even though the new grant is not yet approved, you can start getting ready today:

  • Register as a job seeker on government employment databases or Public Employment Services
  • Join available skills programmes such as SETA training or short TVET courses
  • Prepare your documents: certified ID copy, updated CV, proof of residence, qualifications and banking details

Public comments on the proposal close on 30 April 2026. After that, government will review feedback and decide on the final plan.

Tips to improve your chances

Many people fear the SRD grant will suddenly stop. It will not — it runs until March 2027. Use this time well. Update your CV, build real skills, and stay active in looking for opportunities. The more prepared you are, the better your chances when the new system starts.

Apply for learnerships and training programmes regularly. Keep your information up to date. Small steps now can make a big difference later.

Take action today. Check if you are registered as a job seeker, start one small skills course if possible, and keep your documents ready. Whether the Livelihoods Support Grant comes or not, building your skills and experience is the smartest way forward. You still have time — use it wisely. Good luck.
