DBE – Register on the National Qualified Educator Database (Free)

Thousands of teachers are looking for work right now. If you have a teaching qualification and are unemployed or want extra work, registering on the National Unemployed Qualified Educator Database can put you in front of schools that need you.

What the National Unemployed Qualified Educator Database Is

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) created this free database to match qualified teachers with vacant posts in public schools. Schools can search the list and contact teachers directly, instead of waiting for every vacancy to be advertised.

Who Can Register

You may sign up if you hold a recognised South African teaching qualification or a foreign qualification that has been verified.

  • Qualified teacher who is unemployed
  • Newly qualified teacher looking for the first job
  • Teacher seeking temporary or substitute work
  • Educator moving to another province

All applicants must have a recognised qualification such as a BEd, PGCE, Higher Diploma in Education, or an equivalent.

What You Gain

  • Access to both permanent and temporary teaching positions
  • Opportunity to be considered for vacancies that are not publicly advertised

Tips to Improve Your Chances

  • Keep your CV current. List qualifications, teaching experience, subject specialities, extra‑curricular involvement and any recent professional development.
  • Upgrade your skills. Short courses in educational technology, inclusive education, classroom management, STEM teaching or digital learning platforms are highly valued.
  • Prepare for interviews. Practise common teaching interview questions and rehearse clear, concise answers.
  • Stay active. Continue applying for advertised posts while you are listed in the database.

Next Steps

Register today to make sure schools can find you when a vacancy arises. Remember, the database does not guarantee a job, but it does broaden the pool of opportunities you can be considered for.

After you send in your form, the DBE will add your details to the system. Schools will then be able to view your profile and may contact you directly.

Take advantage of this free, national platform and keep sharpening your CV and interview skills. The more avenues you use, the better your chances of landing a teaching position in South Africa’s public schools.
